Following a review of the New Testament emphasis on sound doctrine as related to church planting, and the IMB's current strategy for evangelism and church planting, an eight-hour doctrinal course was developed, implemented and tested over a 16-month period with positive results. He discovered evangelism was more effectively learned experientially.  He researched two basic fears in evangelism: incompetence and rejection.  He studied basic apologetics and researched how to overcome distractions in evangelism.  The conclusion was the teachers were more equipped as a result of the project than before it. The project's scope was to lead parishioners in a survey of the AME Church's doctrines, discipline, and membership responsibility. Participants were engaged through a series of eight seminars, four sermons, and a retreat. They averaged fifty-minutes in eight seminars, twenty-five minutes listening to four sermons, and forty-five minute sessions in the one half-day retreat. Evaluation instruments were administered for assessing the project director's effectiveness, participants' retention, and value of the material. Chapter 2 gives the biblical, theological, and historical bases for the evangelism of children. Parents and the church are to work in partnership in the evangelism and discipleship of children. Chapter 3 examines cognitive and spiritual development of children. Personality types are examined as they relate to spiritual sensitivity to provide an overview of intentional evangelism. Chapter 4 covers what happened during the fifteen-week project. This chapter focuses on giving the facts of what happened and who was involved. Chapter 5 is the evaluation of the project. This chapter shares the goals that were met and those that were not. The author gives his personal theological reflection. The author shares his experience of preaching in a congregation that was learning to be hopeful after decades of discouragement and declining membership and participation. As hope and faithful purpose began to reshape Mayflower Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Englewood, Colorado, the author believed it was important to document this transformation and to describe some of the actions that were helping this hopeful process develop.
