The model evolved from the real life situation of the Savannah Grove Baptist Church of Effingham, South Carolina. It shows how a congregation diseased with the virus of chaos, conflict and controversy over many years moved to become a semblance of spiritual resourcefulness, a center of health where congregants demonstrate maturity and contribute to healing and wholeness. The project shows that this happened via a Christ-centered model wherein the total congregation became involved in the leadership of the church. Industries failed More church members were dying than new members joining. We formed a grief ministry to care for the church and community families. I developed this project as a retreat experience based upon the Healing care groups curriculum as developed by Terry Wardle.  Six goals were developed to measure the degree to which this project was successful. The researcher interviewed a representative sample of the congregation for their perceptions of the explicit and implicit theologies of how decisions are made in the congregation. The interviews were analyzed by an advisory group of congregational leaders. They had been trained to examine their culture and its effect on their theology by using prayer, worship, and classic writings of the church, especially the Bible. I integrated my experience as a pastor and consultant for a church construction company with a review of contemporary literature and created a guide for church leaders.  I then submitted the guide to thirteen experts for their review and input.  The input from the experts resulted in a much improved guide. Through exegetical study of Matthew 18 and 1 Corinthians 5 and 6, and drawing from the current literature and personal interviews of church conflict practitioners, a protocol was developed fusing together organizational, interpersonal, scriptural, and scientific approaches to help individuals, churches and regions address conflict within the Vineyard church. The model was a five-week Bible study intended to enhance awareness, understanding, and respect of pastors' spiritual authority, as well as to offer guidance in providing nurture and support to pastors.  The model was evaluated by denominational leaders, pastors, and lay persons. Participants took a quantitative pre-test assessing their level of spiritual strength before receiving training and experience in eight sessions.  Following the training, they took the quantitative post-test, which included qualitative questions.  The project was successful. Participants developed better understanding about the relationship between spiritual vitality, deep wounds, and formational prayer. The specific emphasis was on the education of African American youth.  The method of reach and study included: 1. Reading from various sources to gain thoughts, material, and ideas for a sermon series to be preached on the church's role in educating children. 2. Forming a focus group of four to eight members of Metropolitan, consisting of public school teachers as well as Christian educators and lay members. The group discussed the impact of the sermons and shared observations. 3. I preached a series of messages on educating children and volunteering for Vacation Bible School. This series led up to our 2006 Vacation Bible School. I utilized different preaching genres (i.e. expository, narrative/didactive, and topical). The author reviewed a comparison of volunteers from 2005 and 2006. New volunteers were surveyed to see if the messages had any bearing on their motivation for working with the schools. An exit discussion was held with the focus group which aided in the assessment of the project. Suggested materials and insights from other preachers who utilized motivational models in their ministries to galvanize volunteers to be instrumental in the lives of youth were also used. As a result of the author's efforts, sermons and a host of other objectives and energies within the church, the congregation recognized the need for volunteers. In the conclusion of the matter, a myriad of activities and motivations influenced volunteerism. While one should never underestimate the power of the pulpit and the preaching moment, especially in the African American religious experience, preaching is only one facet of the faith strategy. The participants engaged one another with the model and the movement of the Holy Spirit substantially increased their confidence in both their personal and corporate prayer.
