This project will be an equipping program model.  The project director will conduct research and develop materials to be used to train a group of deacons and wives for the purpose of assisting pastoral staff in aftercare ministry.  The equipping process will include: 1) providing a biblical rationale for utilizing deacons in aftercare ministry; 2) providing information discovered as a result of research regarding grief associated with death; 3) training the group to assist pastoral staff in aftercare ministry; and 4) encouraging sensitivity to and participation in aftercare ministry. This project contends that Christian blessings can be given in a traditional Hawaiian form that would enable believers to connect with unchurched friends and neighbors and thereby proclaim the blessing that is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was found that in the experience of the volunteers, giving blessing opens up deeper discussions with coworkers, friends and neighbors and that such discussions can and do lead to sharing the good news of God's blessing. Specifically, this research sought to confirm the hypothesis that the essential principles of visual communication--rhythm, contrast, balance, proportion and unity--are applicable to verbal communication as well.  The research first surveys relevant literature in fields of visual and verbal communication and then noted the principles within the biblical text.  From this review, an evaluation instrument was designed.  Then, three preachers were selected and their sermons transcribed and evaluated according to a validation grid. This project focuses on what churches can do to address more effectively these needs and thereby provide important support and encourage church involvement and satisfaction. The project examines the information gleaned from extensive interviews conducted with seventeen midlife individuals from the same congregation. The interview responses cover four areas: 1) midlife experience, 2) spiritual needs, 3) diversity, and 4) church involvement and satisfaction. From the responses, five specific spiritual needs are identified. They are: vision, staff, lay leaders and core volunteers, finances, location and facility, ministries, technology and equipment, governance and operations structures. Nine churches that have successfully launched multi-sites were selected as field participants.  A developed survey was administered to the participants and the results analyzed to validate or invalidate the hypothesis. Congregations established in faith and doctrine may examine and utilize the language, philosophy and training examples of several successful hospitality businesses to provide a welcoming environment and offer ministry opportunities to guests and first time visitors.  The author researched three business and two churches to compare intentional hospitality processes, examined the congregation's statistical data, assembled several presentations, and educated the congregation of the results.
