As interviews from hospital chaplains converse with recent research on negative faith coping, and with St. Thérèse of Lisieux's experience of pulmonary tuberculosis and a trial of faith during her last eighteen months, chronicled in Story of a Soul, twelve themes emerge. Workshop curriculum included the need for mentoring, principles involved in mentoring relationships, mentoring practices, and personal witnessing. Architectural, historical and theological sources from the Reformed tradition inform the study. The theological basis for preaching and communication within the congregation are defined. All good communication requires feedback. Three models of congregational feedback and critique were created: listening group, Sunday worshippers and adult education classes. A model for feedback from peers is also explored. The most important elements of preaching are defined by each group and contrasted with Baylor University's definition of effective preaching. It is revealed how much more concrete and practical congregations define preaching than does Baylor. The reluctance to receive feedback and obstacles to enhancing Lutheran preaching are explored. The project was motivated in large part by the lack of attention to the arts in conservative, evangelical churches in America.  Two groups from such a church, Circleville First Baptist Church in Ohio, completed this seven-session study in early 2004.  Simultaneously, the author preached a sermon series utilizing art entitled Finding Beauty in the Bible.
