Twenty-two Southern Baptist churches minister in this area.  The population of the area has continued to increase, but the attendance in the churches has decreased.  This project describes the development and administration of a strategy for equipping five of the churches to grow by congregationalizing the retirees.  The writer trained and assisted the pastors and leaders of the five participating churches to start retiree fellowship groups. Its premise is God's intention that churches grow inwardly, if not numerically.  Purposes were to develop a methodology for renewal and growth in the target churches and establish stronger ministry roles for pastors.  The project, experienced by four churches, involved research of church and community data.  In a church retreat people studied the information, identified needs, established goals and action plans. Congregations received and approved the plans and pursued immediate goals for three months. The study is interdisciplinary in approach, drawing from scriptural tradition, critical evaluation of trained/untrained auditors along with insights from modern communication theories.  The basic premise of the project is that effective biblical pulpit communication can be achieved in the church.  The project reviews fifteen weeks of designated sermons from the book of Hebrews.  Talk-back sessions followed the preaching of the messages. Supervised subgroups of the congregation met in homes, called 'homegroups.'  The homegroup leaders went through leadership training touching on areas such as theology for homegroups, biblical fellowship, crowd breakers, church outreach, sharing your testimony, servanthood, biblical caring, and prayer in small groups.  Another subgroup called marriage-obics was instituted for young marrieds first, and then opened to all who were married.  The strength of this ministry was in its practicality and spontaneity.  Measurement of success was made by written evaluation of the participants. The project recognized that the campus community can become the training ground for future leadership in the local church.  The theological foundation for the project was based upon God's gifting of individuals and their subsequent service in the body of Christ, taken from Ephesians 4:11-13. The project utilized a series of questions that enabled the student leaders to evaluate themselves, their group, and their peers in the areas of task accomplishment and personal development.  Student leaders entered into a covenant relationship with the project director to accomplish this task and to develop personally.  Measuring instruments, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and FIRO-B, were used to provide a profile of each individual involved in the project. Various evaluations concluded the 18-month project that took place at the University of Washington in Seattle. The biblical model of conflict resolution between Aramaic-speaking and Greek-speaking Christians provided inspiration for the project.  A questionnaire was designed to survey and gather data on conflict management of Chinese-born and American-born Chinese church leaders.  Next, training sessions were developed with six areas of emphasis.  They were conducted at three Chinese churches in different geographical locations. He notes a contemporary waning of covenantalism and a skewing of voluntarism into expressive individualism.  In response to this individualism, two practices for a reclamation of covenantalism among Southern Baptists is presented: congregational covenant-making and covenantal consultation.  A model of consultation is developed which is congruent with the covenant heritage. Since usual prayer forms are not helpful during times of emotional breakdown, the author designed a course in prayer, using both verbal and non-verbal modalities.  Using a phenomenological methodology, the study demonstrates that by expressing pain in a community of co-sufferers, the participants were able to discover new images of God, and new ways of praying while experiencing acute suffering.
