Although they comprise a significant proportion of lay leadership, deacons are frequently underused and appear to flounder.  This project examines this ministry of the deacon and provides specific options for its improvement.  Through the use of surveys and in-depth interviews, the project identifies four pivotal areas where deacons appear to flounder: 1) biblical-historical roots; 2) understanding their role as 'the Body' of Christ; 3) servanthood; 4) purposeful organization. These messages, though often subliminal, reinforce values about what is 'good' and what is 'bad', as well as what and who are important.  Although we are taught in school to be literate readers, we are never really taught television literacy. The purpose of this project is to analyze the effectiveness of food banks as a means of addressing this problem.  The writer reviews the scriptures and discovers two themes: 1) everything belongs to God, and 2) God's people are to look to the needs of others.  The writer examines current literature and discovers that poverty is tied closely to hunger.  The Westside Food Bank is used as a model of food banking.  Three other food banks in Arizona also are studied. It begins with background information regarding population statistics, physical, psychological, behavioral and spiritual characteristics and living situations of older persons. The author reviews sections of Luke and suggests insights regarding spiritual meanings of the texts for the two populations. She reports on 'Spirituality and Aging' projects with older persons from each population. She responds to the questions regarding spiritual implications of the characteristics of the two populations.  She finds that Scripture is meaningful to the two populations and that they benefit from projects like those she develops. It focuses on the eating experiences of Jesus and the spirit of his ministry.  It concludes that communion should be open to all, especially since it proclaims His death which was for all.  Eating together should give us a sense of solidarity with our sisters and brothers throughout the world and identify us with their sufferings and joys.  The project contains recent Eucharistic liturgies, many of which are from Third World countries.  It includes an extensive bibliography and the text of the author's 'Solidarity Liturgy' which is espescially appropriate for World Communion.
