Spiritual guidance is presented wtihin the context of contemporary spirituality, showing how it differs from pastoral counseling. Authors who had written on this subject in the past five years were consulted. The thesis also examined definitions and directions through a questionnaire mailed out to five hundred protestant churches representing three Lutheran 'evangelical' denominations.  The thesis was tested through the efforts of a lay ministry team.  This group arrived at a definition of lay ministry and implemented their ministry through several case studies which are presented. Commentaries for each Sunday's set of readings for the three-year cycle were written.  Three periods of in-ministry testing of a congregation demonstrated  that the majority of congregational respondents benefitted from emphasis on the Old Testament message, and that lay and peer advisory group respondents grew in their appreciation of that message and its integration in their faith-life. He used lay and clergy advisory groups, interviews with knowledgeable persons, perusal of major works in the field, and personal experience to develop and test these guidelines and practices based upon them. The beginning point of the study is the psychological and spiritual suffering of the alienated psyche in the archetypal wasteland, a painful condition in which the individual feels separated and alienated from his or her own unconscious depths, from other people in human community, and from a seemingly destructive and unavailable God.  This archetypal experience is viewed as the a priori condition for the healing of psyche and soul, a transformation which occurs through the establishment of a redeeming link with an infinite source of wisdom, guidance and blessing called, variously, the self-archetype or the greater personality in psychological language, or the mysterium tremendum or wholly other in theological language. The dream's significance as an avenue of revelation and guidance in biblical history is demonstrated.  Freud and Jung's rediscovery of dreams' meaningfulness and their respective dream theories are discussed.  Methods of dream interpretation in the therapeutic process are presented. Types of dreams are categorized and illustrated.  A profile based on a survey and interviews of one congregation's attitudes are presented. Using the concept of 'levels of truth' from Anne Wilson Schaef's book, Women's Reality, as the organizational backbone, three levels of relationships are addressed.  Level one outlines the congruent interface between psychotherapy and spiritual direction where emotional needs and the spiritual search are one in the same.  Level two outlines the incongruent areas where both disciplines stand in a relationship of tension.  Four areas are explored: awakened consciousness, ego-negation, self-knowledge, and discernment.  The bridge building chapter integrates the theory of Winnicott, Rizzuto, and Meissner with the thinking of Needleman, Edwards and Jones.  Level three is a synthesis of both disciplines.
