This project explores how a congregation’s self-understanding is shaped by stories they tell and live. The context for this project was my ministry leadership in three Mennonite congregations during pastor transitions. I started the project by researching ecclesiological themes of importance to these congregations: sixteenth-century Anabaptism, missional ecclesiology, and narrative theology. I crafted and implemented a process of engagement utilizing these themes allowing congregations to take steps toward discovering identity, purpose, and a hopeful future. I conducted ethnographic research and facilitated congregational interaction with their stories, ecclesiological themes, and the defining narrative of scripture. This resulted in a narrative summary, written identity, and purpose statement for each congregation. The outcome of this narrative approach for ecclesiological understanding is seen in the clear, hope-filled identity and purpose statements developed by these three Mennonite congregations."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9331"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135600207724544,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:39.118Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6ee21557-4f3f-4e53-84fb-dcb72367e7cd","accessControl_ssim":["b7ee8427-5ba9-49dd-b3c8-b1336edaea6d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An inward-outward witness : suffering's role in forming faithful preachers"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:19Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:22:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["55894786-b03a-47b3-a63b-4d32afeff1fd"],"hasLease_ssim":["a05c6efa-b811-4f91-987e-0435c3508190"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Chuck DeGroat Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Preachers who have endured life’s deeper dramas and dark nights of the soul are potentially able to better identify with the biblical narrative and then relate that narrative to communities of hurting people, especially in an epoch when escapism and denial toward hardship are becoming increasingly normative. This is not to suggest that while walking the pathway of faithfulness, the devout preacher must embark upon a reconnaissance mission to locate suffering. Rather, since suffering is both universal and specific to the Christian life, those shepherding God’s people must adequately embrace and harness suffering to present hearers with the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135574173679616,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:14.291Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"af44f849-8e3a-4564-88f5-1e196e0ec496","accessControl_ssim":["36b0625d-d0a6-4983-8b77-e0b58c54aa6f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral theology, imagination, and formation in preaching seminarians at Church on the Hill"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:11:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5ef26125-b31c-4dee-8be4-d732c6058add"],"hasLease_ssim":["408d0699-f794-4bce-8fed-377d0d72a4ea"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Chuck DeGroat"],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Such a pastoral theology is grounded in a classical pastoral theology yet is open and innovative through its cultivation and practice of pastoral imagination. After explicating pastoral theology and pastoral imagination and understanding them more deeply through the life and work of Lesslie Newbigin, the paper takes a turn from pastoral theology to pastoral formation. The second half of the paper considers how the formation of pastors through seminary education and field education. Utilizing the work of the Dreyfus brothers and their model for professional growth, pastoral formation is explored in a larger context and longer timeline with particular attention paid to the development of pastoral imagination. They often reach out to provide special services. However, when it comes to addiction and severe hardship, additional specialized services are needed. 2 Kings 5:1 highlights the justice and healing found in God through Scripture, hospitality, and communal care. This project draws upon Richard Osmer’s model for practical theology as well as a selection of models that aide transformation; therefore, case studies, testimonies, and interviews from churches and individuals are provided. Some of the author’s personal experiences of recovery and ministry programs are highlighted in the study as well. Organizational advice, models, and formulas are shared for best practices. Jordan River Ministries and other recovery services such as Teen Challenge, Evergreen Ministries, and RU Recovery highlight their experience, strength, and hope to encourage the work of helping people overcome addictions and hardships. The work of this thesis highlights various recovery ministry models that is inclusive of elements of the church, leadership transformation and community support. Overall, the goal is to show case the need for recovery support, provide resources for the church, organizations and individuals; To encourage a transformative bridge to healing and wholeness and demonstrate successful examples of recovery recipients who came to know God through the auspices of the church. This work is all with the hope to inspire others in living a clean and sober lifestyle and to compel a collaborative connection within the community. Working from the hypothesis, 'The pastor as theologian can lead an historic, urban congregation through a journey of transformation from being a congregation of commuters lacking significant presence in its surrounding community to one that is more responsive to the needs of the community and maintains a felt, empowering presence,' l initiated a five-step discovery process. This process becomes the first step in the transformation journey. The process consists of: a series of sermons, ethnographic interviews with a sample of the congregation, a tour of the surrounding community, a panel discussion with community leaders, and a network mapping exercise."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1770"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135661692026880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:37.754Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:39:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:52:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5fba7c38-c621-4ee3-a97e-c315abb2d48a","accessControl_ssim":["222f7dfc-5454-4e29-90da-7dd6d409864d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Abide in me : a proposal for covenant-renewal in Mennonite Church Manitoba"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:39:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:56:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f92eaf0f-841b-43c7-99f4-bebb72a6bc33"],"hasLease_ssim":["fa9272ad-2cbb-4d45-a668-7ff50c180d12"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["George R Hunsberger"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"location_tesim":["Manitoba"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The concept of ' covenant' became a vehicle for testing the potential for meeting such a need. Research in various disciplines — biblical, historical and sociological — broadened the understanding of the term and provided the basis for the doctor in ministry project.Using the research and participatory methodologies in the project, I took a sample group through a real life experiment with covenant-renewing. The responses of the participants and my analysis sought to answer the hypothesis that a renewed covenant with God is foundational to other relationships in Christian community; it enables the MCM community to grow in faithfulness to God and each other amidst the issues of faith and life, and to discern together through the Holy Spirit the Way of Jesus."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135545854787584,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:52:47.284Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:39:20Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:50:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"19f9b2ea-cb8a-42c9-9a33-4f209575f85d","accessControl_ssim":["bd98a843-d197-4f1f-bb45-0baff4e75f09"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Revival without revolution : the story of how a white, agricultural church became a multi-racial, multi-generational body of Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:39:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:53:43Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fdd0ffb0-f62d-478e-827c-36a4b913424e"],"hasLease_ssim":["b849a85f-3a61-4393-b18a-c2e8faa9f803"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dennis Voskuil Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2015"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. With a rich and proud history as a flagship congregation in the Reformed Church in America, “First Church” has experienced a quarter of a century decline in membership, an exodus of younger families to more affluent areas in the Southwestern Suburbs of Illinois and into Northwest Indiana, and a lull in congregational morale amidst a rapidly diverse community that now is nearly 70% African American. Dynamics of sharp change experienced in racial migration resulting in a changing community, the legacy of past, consistorial leadership and in corporate worship haven given voice to charter a course for a future season of ministry. As a result of racial migration, conflict in worship and a growing sense of congregational despair, First Church was forced to confront their ecclesial mortality in their given context for ministry. Together, they entered into a corporate journey of transformation that changed their congregational composition and renewed their congregational structures and practices which have led to a more robust sense of their identity as God’s diverse people and their purpose in God’s kingdom. The culture is rich and colorful, but also often institutionalizes practices of gender based violence. My desire is to establish experiences of sanctuary in community, offering a safe alternative to the violence and a place where people can encounter the glory of God. After exploring the biblical theology of sanctuary, chaplaincy staff at our mission and I designed a visual model to communicate the concepts. Through Bible studies and discussions with chaplains and adolescent girls, we explored the usefulness of the theology of sanctuary in crisis intervention and in prevention of violence. This information helped to inform continued exploration of what it meant to feel 'safe' amid experiences of gender based violence. We interviewed the founders of a shelter for women who were experiencing violence, the women in the shelter, and women who had transitioned from the shelter back into community along with their family members. The findings suggest principles for ministry groups who wish to establish experiences of sanctuary in community for those involved in gender based violence. The principles are standards which can be applied in a variety of ministry settings and give direction for effective practice of sanctuary in community.Narrative inquiry allowed for hearing the stories of the shelter founders, women, and their family members first hand. Open ended questioning and listening allowed their stories to be told/ heard without over imposing specific direction or bias. Valuing their stories is a first step in valuing the abused for the gifted people they are- already offering a contrast to the objectification they have experienced in the past. It is my hope and belief that the principles can be applied and help inform other ministry groups in providing alternatives to the violence."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135480349196288,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:51:44.813Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
