The discipleship director assembled a strategy leadership team from among the members of the church for the purpose of crafting a strategy for the context of First Baptist Church. The strategy was completed and presented to the church in a regular business session. The first phase of the project involved research to identify the competencies essential to leading sermon-based small groups in the Cornerstone Community Church context for the purpose of disipleship. The research included extensive reading as well as interviewing multiple ministry leaders experienced in the field of sermon-based small groups. The second phase of the project synthesized the research to produce a curriculum designed to equip small group leaders with the competencies identified. In the final phase of the project selected small group leaders from Cornerstone Community Church were equipped with the essential competencies to lead sermon-based small groups. This thesis offers resources for preparation and ongoing formation in the preaching life. The author reviews the literature on difficult scripture texts and proposes interpretive methods for depth analysis. She explores how reflective practices support interpretation by bringing together theological reflection with the adult pedagogical theory known as Transformative Learning to focus on the preacher's frame of reference. She proposes a model of reflection in sermon preparation and investigates its effectiveness in a collaborative study. Through two-one hour long interactive workshops, clergy and lay addressed the problem that people no longer view the church as a place of hope, but rather hurt. Surveys were distributed preceding the initial workshop, and at the conclusion of the final workshop.
