Three areas are identified as contributing to stasis and decline; a shift in vision and values, the personality traits of pastoral leadership, and connection with the surrounding community. Three sets of diagnostic tools were used; the Transforming Church Index, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the FIRO-B Profile, Ministry Area Profile and Compass Report. There are many methods used today to interpret the Bible and decide what verses are descriptive and which are prescriptive.  Most Christians do not know what hermeneutic they use, and often do not apply any hermeneutic consistently.  Further, there are some interpretive methods that are not God-focused and should not be used but are quite common today in the Christian community. It was taught twice at that university by the same instructor with classes of four and sixteen students. Students successfully absorbed the Biblical preaching material, but they did not absorb The seven laws of the learner because of its overwhelming detail. The conclusion was that a course at this level must use books streamlined along the lines of Biblical preaching to avoid 'mental dazzle' or information overload. The primary skills taught and practiced are the discovery and development of the big idea of a biblical passage. The first seminary guides students through the process of identifying the subject and complement of a biblical text and developing them into the big idea. The second seminar focuses on preaching the big idea with contemporary relevance and applying big idea preaching to different genres of the Bible. Young Black adults are not just looking for sound biblical preaching; rather, they are in search of sound biblical preaching that is both creative and grounded in practical wisdom. How can Emergent Church preaching inform Black preaching?  Four sermons by four preachers were analyzed using Haddon Robinson's analysis. Then three Black pastors of Richmond, Virginia, were interviewed to receive feedback.
