The theological rationale focuses on the nature of the church as old and new and the congregation as a complex family system. The literature review focuses on congregational culture, a survey of the transitional leaders' attributes and actions, and an understanding of the learning organization.  A comparison of one congregation's historic vs. current leadership culture, by means of group interviews and surveys, was conducted so as to understand the trajectory of its leadership culture. The objective was to develop a deeper personal relationship with God and one another by becoming more attentive to God. The team was guided through one action research cycle using the spiritual practices of silence and solitude, reflection and journaling, prayer and Lectio Divina for twenty weeks. Data was gathered through written narratives and group interviews and analyzed by qualitative methods. The research indicated that through intentional fostering of individual intimacy with God, an ardent team emerged to corporately provide more discerning spiritual leadership. The Missional Change Model (MCM), developed by Alan Roxburgh and Fred Romanuk (2006), was used as a guide to that process. The MCM is designed to assist a congregation in implementing change. To determine missional readiness at Victoria United, congregational 360 and pastor/leader 360 assessments were completed. The implementation of the MCM occurred over an eight month period. To tap that potential we must listen to the wise voices of those have served before us and to the Holy Spirit that leads us into transformative relationships. This project explores the works of several researchers and scholars who identify the potential outcomes of service-learning and short-term mission, and those interested in the transformational effects of such experiences. The frequency and range of church kitchen use was studied by surveys and interviews of 29 churches across 10 denominations. Kitchen operations, food preparation, kitchen utility, and the connections between the kitchen and the pulpit were studied. The project's goals were to research the congregation's knowledge and participation in community service and determine how it affected their faith, and how their faith affected their view of community service as they served those in need. The project also served in providing the minister knowledge, tools, and resources increasing his effectiveness in practicing ministry in the local congregation. The project enabled the minister to understand that spiritual formation and community service are significantly interrelated as one shares the gospel locally and globally. Connecticut Conference","Christianity","Funeral rites and ceremonies","United Church of Christ--Worship"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation examines the rites that members and churches of the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ perform when a member of the community dies. A distinction between a 'funeral' and 'memorial service' is established, with a funeral defined as a rite provided by the Church at the death of a Christian that is both a rite of passage for the dead and a service of the worship of God for the living, and a memorial service identified as a communal gathering that focuses more on eulogizing and remembering the deceased and less on the overt worship of God. By examining the difference between the two, and by looking at historic liturgical sources, it is clear that in the Connecticut Conference at this time, most rites are memorial services rather than funerals. Assessment was made by means of a qualitative analysis of worship bulletins for rites at the time of death that were submitted by seventy-two of the Connecticut Conference churches, in which worship patterns, hymns and scriptures were identified in order to construct a 'moment-in-time' snapshot of commonalities among churches in a tradition that cherishes individual expression and resists standard liturgies imposed from the denomination.
