The method of study was by interviewing twelve members bereaved through shocking death using a research instrument, and assisted by studies on post-traumatic stress disorder. Many academic-cosmopolitan ministers are unaware of the positive presence and contributions of 'local folks' in rural churches.  Only about two to ten perecent of USA adults are 'academic-cosmopolitans.' The author's research, interviews and personal experience suggest that academic pastors often do not relate well to locals who may be up to sixty percent of the USA adult population. These were based on the biblical concept of the tithe, the stewardship teachings of Jesus and Paul, a theology of money, and various psychological motivations. The process included outside consultation, a four-session study course and five sermons on stewardship.  The pre- and post-course evaluation demonstrated that the study course significantly changed beliefs about stewardship and tithing, and promoted participation in the endowment fund. Using two composite case-histories from overseas and domestic ministries, together with classes and readings as background, the study discovers the necessity for a genuine sense of self and a perspective of subjective and objective truth in all relationships.  It is essential to see and understand one's own personhood within any system, such as a family, a congregation, or even a school of thought. The definition of 'pastor' as leader of the congregation is often defined by what he does rather than who he is.  It is the thesis of this paper that the pastor as leader must be a confessor, a spiritual witness to the gospel which he/she proclaims.  Dietrich Bonhoeffer's writings are utilized as ministry and congregational roles are explored.  Also, various twentieth-century theologians and secular authors are cited for the study.
