The research involves pastors of the Parramatta/Nepean Presbytery.  Methods include personal and group discussion and questionnaires.  The results indicate that pastors are in need of pastoral care and that mateship is an acceptable model for such care. The project establishes support groups from which pastors are able to choose mates for mutual pastoral care. The author conducts interview testing to discover if attitude shifts occur as a result of the subcommittee's work.  He surveys 62 congregations about their confirmation practices. The author discovers that adult experiential education for sacramental healing ministries provides a link between the ministry of Jesus, the early church and the contemporary situation. The study was based on 250 interviews with persons who have become disassociated with the church and with those who are active church leaders and lay persons.  The interviews revealed that the major factor for both apostasy and inactive membership was problems concerning marriage and divorce.  A second factor was lack of support in times of crisis.  Other causes were movement between cities and decline in spiritual life.  The conclusion highlights several causes of apostasy. It begins with a historical review of initiation into the Christian Church and includes an extended section of infant baptism.  The theological stance based on covenant responsibilities and God's grace through Jesus Christ supports infant baptism.  The philosophical arguments involve how we know and communicate reality.  The experiential focus of the confirmation model contrasts with the more popular 'workbook' model. Its authority has been lost because modern Christians have not been taught 'what' the Old Testament is.  It is not a book of science, history, or anthropology.  Because some think that it is this type of book, modern readers consider the Old Testament to be in conflict with their culture, experience and science.  The project introduces the cultural milieu of Israel, the mythological backgrounds of the Old Testament, the literary genre, the history of interpretation, and Protestant authority bases.
