A growing dissatisfaction with present Protestant preaching indicates a need to pursue a style of preaching with greater use of story telling, imagination, narrative and metaphor.  Six doctrinal sermons which include rabbinic material and teaching style are field tested for their acceptability by church members. The implications of servanthood are suggested for the ministry of the church in general and to pastoral care as one particular aspect of servanthood. It uses family systems and object relations theory to support the research.  The project does not provide a comprehensive premarital counseling program but does present a model developed within an Episcopalian context.  The practical research is done by questionnaire-based interviews with twelve couples who experience the genogram as the primary framework for their four to six session premarital programs. It explores their responses to union with white churches and the problems and prospect for such union.  The project uses experiments in worship and mission called 'Generating Communities' and 'Interim Eucharistic Fellowships' and the Institutional Racism Commission to gather learnings about the participation of black churches in the union process. In the second Quadrennium it received greater support from the Church.  Within the Southern New England Conference a strategy was put into place in 1983.  This project focuses on that strategy and raises questions about its relevance. To determine the impact of the strategy, visits are made to ethnic centers, a structured interview is held with Bishop George Bashore and questionnaires are sent to district superintendents, pastors and lay persons. Culturally based differences in styles of worship, leadership, music and outreach are measured through a t-test.  Differences in orientation result in the polarization of the groups.
