The project first presents a doctrine of church and ministry with special emphasis on the United Methodist Church.  It turns next to a description of the practicum which involved the use of especially designed instruments with four pastors and selected congregational representatives, in group and individual sessions. Its importance lies primarily in the fact that it can be utilized by the pastor while counseling in the local church.  The theory and practice of dream use has been used largely in the present century by psychoanalysts for the treatment of psychological illness.  This is the first attempt in a doctoral thesis to apply dream sequences of healthy females to the developmental tasks of the life structure for use by pastors in counseling.  It is my belief that the intentional awareness of the use of dreams can provide an approach to the care of parishioners which enriches all elements of the counseling process. The data collected revealed that there is much going on in church and community directed toward ministry to the elderly but not enough concern being given to the ministry of the elderly.  This means a valuable resource of knowledge, wisdom, and energy is not being adequately used. The study not only collected data to support assumptions and project new learnings but designed and tested a process for helping individuals and churches do some planning directed toward involving elderly in ministry. The study proceeded on the hypothesis that there is  correlation between a congregation's practice of confirmation and the perceptions of youth regarding their identity and participation in that congregation.  The project identified two models of confirmation ministry on the basis of predominate characteristics within that ministry.  Eighth and ninth grade youth from six congregations equally representing the two models participated in the interviews. Several sources for clarifying the developmental issues of seminary students were discussed.  The primary developmental issues of Bethel seminarians were identified as: interpersonal relationships, personal and professional identity, human sexuality, and spiritual formation.  Spiritual formation was selected for additional evaluation.  A more effective response to this need was suggested in light of recent A.T.S. projects on spiritual formation and the developing theory of spiritual formation (e.g. Fowler and others).  A student personnel model for student development was used which incorporates three change strategies: instruction, consultation, and milieu management. Although each church is unique in size and composition, as well as in the circumstances surrounding the pastor's departure, the common element of grief is present.  Personal interviews with church leaders elicited various expressions of sadness in the loss of their pastor.  With learnings related to grief resulting from death and separation, application is then made to the loss of a significant other, a pastor. Biblical and theological references are included. The reason for devising the titled plan and a description of the plan itself follow. Six classes (outlined in the dissertation) were held to teach caring skills to separate groups of church officers and lay members, using biblical 'caring' passages, psychological principles, understanding problems of the dying, the grief cycle, etc.  The writer's evaluation of the program, determined through individual interviews with each trainee after completion of the classes, as well as evaluation of the program's effect on the writer's own ministry are included.
