The central proposal is that a liturgical rite, specifically designed for use in home visitation, can be a valuable tool in helping a pastor become a more effective visitor.  A rite modeled on the 'Affirmation of Baptism' order in the Lutheran Book of Worship is used in parish visits.  Response forms from the visited are included in the project. It gives a working definition of healthy spirituality.  Four case studies address the significance of individual values, guilt, anger, and grief as they relate to anxiety and pain.  The theological rationale for the project is based on Paul Tillich's threefold description of existential anxiety. The study indicates that chronic pain is more often the result of life history than medical history. It seeks help from communications theorists and God's word of reconciliation. Theorists offer communication skills and the view of human nature these skills presuppose.  The Word provides a key to completing the definition of human nature and a solution to the dilemma of people alienated from God and from each other.  The thesis states that the collective witness of Christians will be more understandable, relevant and persuasive when the above contributions are used. The author sought to use the theological criteria of experience, reason, scripture and tradition by studying Wingeier's 'Working Out Your Own Beliefs'.  He taught how Douglas Wingeier, John Macquarrie and Donald Bloesch applied these same criteria to their theological studies. The different criteria that each theologian stressed was discussed with an adult class as they learned to accept or reject each criteria and to follow their own theological guideline in faith translation.
