Research is coupled with the author's personal insights as an active churchman with obsessional tendencies.  The project explores the nature and origin of such a personality and contrasts it with the personality informed by a mature religious sentiment.  In this light, the author evaluates the pastoral ministry of preaching and counseling. The central hypothesis of the project is that pastoral openness to anger and disillusionment are crucial to the reestablishment of contact.  The project employs three home visits and nine group sessions to investigate the depth of marital conversation, marital dynamics, developmental histories, ethical issues of family life and faith issues arising from pastoral involvement. The research notes increased capacity to communicate and to reflect on ethical issues. The participants use group study methods to explore their theology of visitation as it is reflected in their image of ministry and the church.  They explore such aspects of the visitation environment as location, listening skills, awareness of agendas and time management. At the end of the course the participants construct and implement a program of pastoral visitation which is evaluated after four weeks.  The study gives a greater understanding of pastoral visitation. It presents a self-help model comprised of an exercise in ministry identification and three patterns for developing personal theology, exercising collegiality and evaluating ministerial practice. Ordained and lay ministers may employ the model by using resources available where they minister.  The project includes a description of an application of the model to youth ministry. Twenty appendixes document the process.  A definition of Lutheran ministry, a report on a multi-lingual survey of youth ministers in four countries, a theological statement for youth ministry and a method for improving skills are included. The author's inventory is administered to 141 persons in three Lutheran congregations. A critical awareness of the characteristics and dynamics of the relationship in recovery inform the methodology.  The project lists resource materials and discusses results. The first step is to interview personnel in the health field and persons in related fields such as funeral directors, cemetery sextons and even those who sell grave markers.  It is important to obtain input of persons who work with the terminally ill. The second step is to gather all interviewed persons for a planning meeting.  Their support will help to establish the program.  The third step is to establish a committee to express the concerns and commitment of the larger group. The project also considers the transitional diaconate (for those to be ordained to the presbyterate).  It explores the current expression of the permanent diaconate and questions raised within each communion.  The author concludes that the permanent diaconate as an ordained office of ministry should be discontinued and that the transitional diaconate should be retained as an ordained office, but should be revised to respond to the servant mission of the church.
