The fourth contribution to the field of narrative theology and preaching is that the author provides, for the first time, feedback on how narrative sermons are heard and understood by congregational members. When we know that God has suffered what we are suffering, we are able to be healed in our traumatic confrontations, and to grow in faith through this suffering, either to a new wholeness of life, or to live completely to the end in the face of death.  The thesis was tested in marriage counseling, in care of the dying and bereaved, and in unemployment counseling. Part II describes research conducted by means of convenience sampling using a 103-item questionnaire among 451 active Protestants and Roman Catholics fifty-five years of age and older in a midwestern community.  Factor analysis determined five dimensions of religiosity named orthodoxy, personal faith, treatment, satisfaction with life, and dissatisfaction with life. Comparison and correlation of factors and items found a positive attitude about life and more so about congregations.  Men want to feel more useful to their congregations. The author has formally and informally used the grid both as a pastor and as a consultant. The thesis is that an enlightened understanding of conflict and the development of certain communicative skills can significantly affect how the parishioner perceives conflict and thus how he or she will behave in conflictive situations thereby reducing the strained interpersonal relationships and alienation that often follows in the wake of the conflict.  A conflict skills curriculum was developed for the Ardmore Seventh-Day Adventist Church.  Participants were volunteers from the congregation who met weekly for a total of 8 sessions. They were tested prior to the seminar and again at the end. A control group was used for the purpose of comparison. The question addressed was, Will a seminar on conflict change the participants' attitude and feelings about conflict. The remaining 400 churches were small churches. Therefore the research and study was designed to measure the effectiveness of the use of a conference in a small church for prayer and financial support and personal commitment for mission involvement.  A conference was proposed to the Chattanooga Valley Presbyterian Church; it was accepted.  A committee was formed to plan, promote and conduct a conference with a speaker and missionary guests.
