As understood and practiced in the local church evangelism is in critical condition.  Evangelism is an unfriendly word.  Leadership's challenge is to discover and implement a fresh approach.  Bethany Church, located in growing southern New Hampshire, developed a strategy stressing disciple-making rather than decision-making. Using community assessment and a congregational survey, Bethany created a paradigm to reclaim the evangelistic enterprise by: expanding the vision; equipping the people; targeting the audience; and incorporating the newcomer. The study was limited to those who had spent a minimum of five years in the parish after becoming ordained.  An attempt was made to look at roles, family dynamics, and relationships with the system of the denomination.  All subjects were mailed questionnaires, and a portion of the subjects were interviewed. Growth-groups can assist black people to explore internal, debilitating conditions, and can help create changes in perceptual awareness. Elements of the model tested include: theological, educational and developmental methodology, cross-cultural meeting and ministry and spiritual growth through Native American and Christian disciplines. Consequently, we should develop ways of worshipping that will meet the needs of those who attend yet stimulate the uninvolved and turned-off persons of the community.  The literature of worship, past and present, was studied, along with the worship of various congregations.  At the same time, members of our worship commissions were encouraged to read books on worship and to ask questions where they were unclear about why we worship as we do.  Worship can be enriched, but this involves change which may be resisted. Our approach has been for the pastor and worship commissions to work together as they looked at our worship and decided upon ways it might be enriched and improved. If general agreement was not reached, changes were not made. After a good many changes had been made, we prepared a questionnaire to obtain congregational reaction to them and to help us plan future actions. The project included a face-to-face interview with most members of the congregation to obtain member responses concerning their own Christian participation and needs, together with their views of the life of the congregation and work of its leadership.  All of this was compared with the results of a major biblical study about the church.
