We studied three traditional responses that have been made at various intervals to the problem of evil, that of Leibniz, Augustine, and Calvin, the thought of Walter Kaufmann on the problem of evil, and three non-traditional responses to the problem made by Spinoza, Schleiermacher, Unamuno, and David Ray Griffin. In a ten week study group we addressed the philosophical problem of evil with a group of interested laypersons. The model presumes a basic course in preaching offered through the seminary. Five students preached five times in their pastoral settings, and worked with a group of laity and pastors/supervisors to prepare and to critique their preaching. The primary finding indicates that the method works well if done correctly. Students can learn preaching skills effectively through direct contact with parishioners and supervisors in a real preaching experience. The lay people benefit also by learning about Scripture, preaching, and the coming Sunday celebration. Such a method reflects a contemporary ecclesiology of team ministry in a parish."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126898060820480,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:35:20.105Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:01:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:02:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c51d86e9-6a4c-42b8-ae9f-3462d1716809","accessControl_ssim":["d8c75621-274a-4a41-9e35-01e63e84c5ff"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Ghetto and diaspora: the ministry of a black gathered inner city church to the community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:01:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:47:40Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["04767150-940c-4734-a1f5-e996bffa02bd"],"hasLease_ssim":["0bb03c39-81c7-4331-b6df-542e35752da7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["J Philip Wogaman"],"year_tesim":["1970"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Churches in racial-transitional communities come up against powerful social forces that make it extremely difficult for them to survive and carry on a ministry. However, they have a good chance of maintaining a presence in such areas when they develop a sense of mission towards all residents of the communities irrespective of racial-ethnic identities."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716961416904704,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:10:42.904Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:01:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:02:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c5701e8a-a07d-402b-ae89-555d9baf7ab8","accessControl_ssim":["86d7625f-bba8-477c-a8b3-6c69c29f4ef0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The hindu and christian views of salvation according to the advaita vedanta and the new testament"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:01:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:48:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5c8fc92a-b756-4bdf-b25b-d643b5c61d78"],"hasLease_ssim":["8ed64e5a-2def-487a-ac07-13b256f06a39"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Schilling"],"year_tesim":["1971"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. It explores the distinctive nature, the bondage and liberation of man according to this Hindu philosophical view and Christianity. The former maintains the unity of the essential self and brahman, the ill consequences of Avidya and Karma and the way of freedom through Moksha. The latter teaches that man, the creature, estranged and enslaved in sin, is distinct from God, the creator, but he through faith can be reconciled to God by the death of Christ on the cross.
