First, a literature review surveys writings on leadership succession from both the secular and Christian perspectives, with an examination on the biblical insights and a theological framework for leadership succession. The second part of the dissertation covers the qualitative research procedure used in this project through the case study method and its strengths and weaknesses. The third part of the dissertation reports the case study research findings from the three case studies Chinese heritage churches that have completed what is deemed as successful internal senior pastor’s succession considering the four hypotheses. The final section draws out the applications from the research that can be applied to any church considering internal leadership succession with a special focus on the needs of Chinese heritage churches in America. The conclusion of the dissertation also includes the limitations of this study as well as suggestions for future research."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130171619672064,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:27:22.014Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:55:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:24:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1f322763-88f9-4703-8da6-45ccf0fad4ed","accessControl_ssim":["9f5ac1be-9791-4a75-a279-b699c2486a6c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An Examination Of How To Revitalize A Church In A Demographically Changed Community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:55:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:03:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b7d22f17-74d8-4798-8d57-b996339ea9c2"],"hasLease_ssim":["83daf039-5faa-45a1-adb5-8c367c11ed66"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert Rowley D.Min.","Dwight Nash D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2022"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Doleshal, Robert"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Church renewal","Church growth"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Demographic diversity is both a cause for church decline and churchrevitalization. A popular myth holds that the marriages of most couples raising aspecial needs child end in divorce. However, numerous studies show this is not alwaysthe case; in fact, in many instances, raising a special needs child makes a couple’smarriages stronger. This study focused on researching and identifying key factorscontributing to marital satisfaction among couples raising a special needs child.Previously, there has been little research done on this topic, a fact which inspired theresearcher to look into this phenomenon. The discovery of these major factors will behelpful to couples raising special needs children, pastors, and marriage counselors. To gather the necessary data for this study, three different methods were used.First, descriptive surveys were administered to discover qualified couples who fulfilledthe established criteria. Second, the quantitative research method was employed throughsurveys that were used to identify key factors contributing to the marital satisfaction ofthe volunteering couples. Third, the qualitative research method was used throughpersonal interviews with the selected couples to identify the major factors thatcontributed to their satisfaction in their marriages. The results of this research support the association between maritalsatisfaction among Korean American couples raising a special needs child andcommunication, spirituality, and commitment. Currently usedin professional healthcare settings, the curriculum was applied to the local church settingby leading interested church pastors, ministry leaders, volunteers, and family members orcaregivers of those who have been diagnosed with AD through the NCCDP training.Armed with a greater knowledge and understanding of the needs of Alzheimer’s patients, the long-term hope behind the project was that these church leaders and the churches they serve would then be able to develop more intentional programs to minister to theseindividuals and their families. In total, thirty-two participants from three different churches and one Zoomsession attended the seminar, which was conducted four times. An identical survey ofquestions rated on a Likert scale was given to the contributors before and after theseminar, providing the quantitative data for evaluation of the seminar’s effectiveness. The statistical analysis did reveal a significant improvement in how participants rated theirattitudes, perceptions, and knowledge of some facts regarding AD and the specificspiritual, physical, and emotional needs of individuals with AD. The findings lead to theconclusion that the NCCDP seminar could be an effective ministry tool for ministers andchurches interested in cultivating opportunities to serve the needs of individuals with ADin their communities, along with their families."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131077208702976,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:41:45.651Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:54:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:29:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bd9f3aca-e8ac-401c-aa9c-f137f3c4eb56","accessControl_ssim":["927aafb9-bbd0-4dab-bba4-d381d59fe4d4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Medicine of Mercy: Preaching on Addiction in the Field Hospital Parish"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:54:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:35:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a94b3314-2b97-43b1-8054-263b74c3e790"],"hasLease_ssim":["9c9d3f15-47e6-4a0d-aeb9-eba3bef4d612"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Homiletics"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Kay Northcutt D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2022"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Fought, Eric"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Catholic Church","Church work with addicts","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, statistics related to the ongoing crisis of addiction in the United States hit record levels. Those statistics include drug overdose deaths, rates of substance use and misuse, and alcohol-related fatalities. Some Christian denominations and individual congregations, including a handful of Roman Catholic parishes, have sought to respond to the suffering experienced by those in active addiction through intentional ministries of care, support, and community. Yet preaching on the topic of addiction—and the hope found in recovery—remains rare in churches on Sunday morning. This thesis explores the complex and confounding realities of addiction, its causes, and multiple pathways to recovery, while articulating an urgent and salient call for Roman Catholic priests and deacons to address the crisis of addiction in their midst. The primary ministerial intervention for the thesis consisted of a one-day workshop for Roman Catholic priests and permanent deacons in Minnesota. Pre-workshop interviews were conducted with two cohorts: ten priests and permanent deacons in active ministry (Cohort One), and ten practicing Catholics in recovery from addiction (Cohort Two). The interviews considered whether preaching on the topic of addiction and recovery was taking place in Roman Catholic parishes around the country and what might be most helpful or harmful for people in recovery or in active addiction to hear from preaching in their parishes. Chapter 1 introduces the thesis project overall.Chapter 2 considers addiction theologically, focusing on three areas of study: sacramentality; sin, grace, and the unconditional love of God; and trauma-informed or trauma-sensitive theology. Chapter 3 explores the importance of story, specifically in the salvific and life-giving tradition of twelve-step storytelling and in the inductive practice of narrative preaching in the style of the New Homiletic. Chapter 4 provides a detailed exploration of addiction, considering clinical diagnostic criteria, neurological and sociological research, and current trends regarding the prevalence of stigma and challenges to achieving recovery for many. Approximately one-third of Christians who suffer from Substance Use Disorder demonstrate spiritual struggle as evidenced by anger toward their concept of God. Ninety-seven Midwestern Substance Use Disorder (SUD) patients receiving in-patient treatment participated in a study to determine the effectiveness of a freewill theodicy intervention on spiritual struggle. Patients scoring in the highest one-third in spiritual struggle on the Anger Towards God Scale (ATGS-9) were offered an intervention based on education of freewill theodicy, consisting of 5 1/2 hour group sessions and a reading of Randy Alcorn's, If God is Good, Why Do We Hurt? The project tested the hypothesis that a six-class emphasis on EI followed by four weeks of journaling exercises would increase EI levels in students preparing for ministry. In addition, the researcher established the link between wisdom in the book of Proverbs and its’ connection with EI. The researcher used an EI inventory, developed by Richard Boyatzis and Daniel Goleman (ESCI-U), designed for the university setting. Five categories are assessed by the ESCI-U: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Management, and Cognitive Competencies. There are twelve competencies organized into four clusters. Self-Awareness is the first cluster area, and the competency measured is Emotional Self-Awareness. The second cluster is Self-Management. In this cluster, there are four competencies: Achievement Orientation, Adaptability, Emotional Self-Control, and Positive Outlook. In the third cluster, Social Awareness, Empathy, and Organizational Awareness competencies are assessed. Finally, the fourth cluster area includes five competencies: Conflict Management, Coach and Mentor, Influence, Inspirational Leadership, and Teamwork. Following the presentation of the class material, the students engaged in four weeks of practicing The Daily Examen and journaling. After the four weeks of reflection, the students retook the EI inventory. The beginning and ending scores were compared. The project successfully improved EI levels because each student showed an increase in at least three of the twelve competencies, according to the ECSI-U inventory. Four students (67% of the class) showed an increase in at least half of the competencies, and two of the four increased in nine and ten of the competencies, respectively."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Denver Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7af129f-938f-4821-9463-dc6ded35d563"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133207152820224,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:15:36.924Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:54:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d0d17a96-3721-487b-95cc-bbdf49fc169c","accessControl_ssim":["1fa3773a-8293-4a44-87cf-88e8219e0fbe"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["From puffs of dust to pockets of grace : the present-future of RCA Global Mission"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:54:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:06:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ea59231f-2365-4b75-9478-d9022876c555"],"hasLease_ssim":["40285bf1-12c0-44ea-8750-8677b5441fb7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Chuck DeGroat Ph.D.","Kyle J. RCA Global Mission has been the glue that held the denomination together through the chasms and disagreements that divided us. RCA Global Mission has been the rallying point for the denomination through its various ups and downs through history here in North America.Unfortunately, the denomination is engaged in another period of division, and RCA Global Mission is faced with questions of survival and stagnation at a time when the denomination needs a bold new vision from its historic mission agency. This project offers a case for how RCA Global Mission can be an agent and participant in God’s mission of healing for the RCA over the next 10 years."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/10516"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135673475923968,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:48.993Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:54:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:55:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f3eb356f-c907-488f-a1dc-707849d326d4","accessControl_ssim":["d846e05b-d444-4aa5-8ae9-bc1dc0cf2c80"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Marketplace leaders of Legacy Church and the Great Commission"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:54:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:05:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["578a3557-398d-440a-84ef-efa15a08e983"],"hasLease_ssim":["ccb2618e-fd69-4ffe-ae32-9c4f1adf2271"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Small, Kyle J. Coupled with ecclesial ambivalence, Legacy Church seeks to address believers who can be salt and light in a struggling landscape. The Great Commission is Jesus’ final instruction to His disciples as the invitation to seek out the world and make disciples. This project focuses on how marketplace leaders of Legacy Church understand their role in fulfilling the Great Commission. Legacy Church is a marketplace church committed to impacting our geographical area by engaging in missional and incarnational living outside the construct of church activities. This is an ethnographic study exploring how marketplace leaders view themselves as disciples and how they participate in the Great Commission due to their adoption into the Kingdom of God. The exploration of the data reveals a deep sense of belonging in Christ that shapes the way marketplace leaders live and engage in church activities and also reveals a gap in their comfortability to engage in faith-based conversations at home, in the neighborhood, or at work. This gap compels Legacy Church to add to its Growth Track and produce a learning engagement that will equip marketplace leaders to have curious and courageous conversations about their faith outside the church. Life Groups are a core activity for developing authentic relationships; the study reveals the impact of these groups. This project leverages the natural relationships of Life Groups within Legacy to develop marketplace leaders who will be equally empowered in their faith at home, at work, and in neighborhoods as they are within Legacy Church."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/10521"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135711687081984,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:55:25.434Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
