Since 2003, and as part of a strategic plan, the COGOP implemented an operative plan to encourage sustained growth; with goals and contextual emphasis, and to respond to our specific needs to reach our immediate, intermediate, and long terms goals. Covid-19, global migration, urbanization, secularization, postmodernism, plus social and political uncertainty require relevant and contextual discipleship. This academic exercise uses the participant observation method as a tool to examine current discipleship realities through analyzing scholarly work on the topic and by exploring four discipleship practices in four pastoral networks. This thesis argues that relevant discipleship requires the presence of five characteristics: intimacy, purpose, value, security, and vulnerability.Chapter one explores the problem of irrelevant discipleship and defines discipleship as a relational process instead of as a program or method to be used in churches and denominations. Discipleship is defined as enjoying God’s quality of life beyond doctrinal knowledge as individuals growth in Christ’s character and engage in making disciples. Chapter two explores the biblical framework of discipleship by identifying discipleship in the Old and New Testaments. It also looks at historical expressions of discipleship and theological discipleship models through history. Chapter three reviews discipleship literature, focusing on the work of nine authors across different contexts. Chapter four describes how the participant observant method is applied in this academic exercise among selected literature consulted and pastoral networks observed. Chosen literature fitted the twofold criteria used to select authors: scholarly authors who are pastors and who are involved in discipleship networks. Chapter five presents conclusions produced by this academic exercise; it also provides recommendations offered by the author on how to implement the five discipleships elements presented in this thesis."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/10249"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135410579046400,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:38.275Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:52:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5e8f5b0e-9f02-4ce8-b18a-14685f1030be","accessControl_ssim":["7c637695-7ea7-4e00-aac6-97fd190ed777"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Seeing and believing : using visual art in spiritual formation in the local congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:54:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5b7695d7-2b99-485a-86c1-a9897f600d39"],"hasLease_ssim":["cc7499d7-8461-4ec7-9489-732029ee9bde"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"location_tesim":["Michigan"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Its conclusion is that art is a gift which God has given to humankind in order to glorify God and to refresh and strengthen the Christian life. A case is made that we are called to seek out and involve ourselves with works of art as they inform us theologically, enrich us spiritually, and serve as channels through which God may speak.Part Two addresses how spiritual formation takes place in individuals and congregations. The work of Urban T. Holmes and Corrine Ware is used as a foundation for identifying different types of spirituality and for exploring how visual art can assist people in their spiritual journeys. The spiritual discipline of 'Lectio Divina' is re-defined and re-interpreted as 'Visio Divina' for use with visual art.Part Three is a presentation and analysis of actual experiences individuals and the congregation at large in Charlevoix have had using visual art in religious education, corporate worship, personal prayer, and outreach--categories that parallel the spiritual components of Holmes' Circle of Sensibility. Some examples are offered as to how visual art has been used to enhance spiritual formation in the First Congregational UCC in Charlevoix. This project gives evidence that utilizing visual art in more intentional ways will not only bring a renewed sense of spiritual vitality to those individuals who engage it directly, but can move whole congregations through its power to awaken, inform, illuminate, and deepen our life in the Spirit."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135543847813120,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:52:45.370Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:55:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ea8c2eb6-4f46-4d20-ad0a-ceaf2f7c96e2","accessControl_ssim":["6e8113d0-7cc5-446a-a2d3-bfd76b45cede"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Seeker sensitive worship in a Reformed context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:50:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["09a7c315-a8ad-4b37-b9c7-c3049c881245"],"hasLease_ssim":["aa3fabd4-2df1-485f-a24e-864c06e58c40"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1998"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. And finally, the author will analyze the different scenarios and opportunities that arise to rethink strategies and models of ministry in accordance with the relativism and pluralism of today's secular society and within the context of the reformed influence on the reality of first-generation Hispanic immigrants. Recognizing that conversation shapes and reflects the cultural context, this manual is presented with the objective of locating the congregation's conversation in the narrative of Scripture. As that narrative begins to shape the conversation of the local church, a new culture is formed within the church and a new engagement with the wider culture is made possible in which the church carries out its vocation as the people of God. Paul's epistles served as the primary basis of research in discerning the pattern of a congregational narrative in the story of Christ's body. This manual, then, is about an adventure in conversation. Congregations, as bodies called upon to express the story of Christ's body in their shared lives, have both an opportunity and an obligation to demonstrate the particular shape of community that God has crafted for missional witness in North America. To that end, this manual presents conversation as an instrument of transformation. The images, symbols, metaphors, and parables at play in the conversation of the local congregation can be formidable when embodied in their practice of being church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135566152073216,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:06.641Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:46Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8ebfac0e-af67-45af-ba0c-634ef043cc56","accessControl_ssim":["cd19ac01-9e19-41e3-937e-bc89ad99d3f5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Good news offered anew"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:18:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f1d94879-1403-4f91-b81f-90b6c73e0f20"],"hasLease_ssim":["cb2f0911-631e-4169-bf20-98aab79687a0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1997"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. This is an exploration of the preaching and teaching event especially as it applies to passing on the doctrines of the church using the Heidelberg Catechism. Particular study is directed toward contemporary thought in business, homiletics, and education as they impact content and style of communication in preaching and teaching in the church. This project demonstrates that technological changes in a post industrial society do not deter the Gospel from being preached and taught in reasoned passionate testimony apprehendable to all who will listen. This project also reveals that the Bible is not without resource for changes in style of communication, but rather continues to offer a message applicable and critical for both life and death in contemporary society."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1569"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135608735793152,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:47.251Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:54Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d38f3db5-8039-4414-82d9-28d017f1ae9f","accessControl_ssim":["d2f1739f-8fba-4785-95c9-07e22bc22d48"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Dialogues to foster interreligious understanding"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:10:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["637f7310-9a49-48ad-938b-345116416335"],"hasLease_ssim":["f8028458-876e-4143-b3b2-c79a49236e37"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1997"],"location_tesim":["India"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. While proximity of religions provides natural occasions for and urgency of open dialogue, partners anywhere benefit from increased respect and understanding achieved through knowledge, convictions, and attitudes expressed. Since religion and culture directly overlap, interreligious conversation is a cross-cultural exposure of faith issues. The geographical focus of the dialogues centers in India, with aspects of the dominant Hindu religion intersecting with the small, minority Christian presence. While attention to the Mennonite denomination reflects the writer's Protestant connection, principles apply to any Christian engagement with other religions.
