From athletic endurance on a football field to intense concentration in a chess match, to Olympic figure skating, people are drawn to a contest. The Apostle Paul understood this human tendency when he used the theme of running a race in I Cor. 9:24-27 to exhort the Corinthian believers to Christian excellence. The purpose of this project is to create a motivating and challenging approach to discipleship at Evangel Temple Assembly of God in Grand Prairie, Texas. It will involve teaching seven to twelve people biblical principles of discipleship tailored around Paul's racing metaphor. The writer hopes that the process will result in a greater interest and participation in active ministry within the local church. The project will consist of ten lessons which will be taught on a weekly basis as a part of the regular Wednesday night program and a concluding session which will incorporate a Sunday evening service allowing participants to minister and testify. Each lesson will teach an area of discipleship and will include both written and hands-on ministry assignments. Lessons will also include an evaluative mechanism which will illustrate both cognitive understanding of the material covered in class as well as show increased involvement in functional ministry. A group ministry project will also be developed."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132603876638720,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:06:01.594Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:40:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:45:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f17a3945-76f7-4a80-b230-a1d9f7cfc713","accessControl_ssim":["30e00cfd-eec8-4101-847b-07d145742fa5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A dialogue between Pauline perspectives on behavior and the cognitive-behavioral methods used in a children's social and emotional skills group program"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:40:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:01:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c4f1f24a-699a-4e43-ab38-61280b106f65"],"hasLease_ssim":["ec059394-c9f1-4f76-97af-93042d8185cd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David Hogue"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Brad W Schwall"],"publisher_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Social psychology","Child development"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This research project provides a dialogue between Pauline perspectives on behavior and the cognitive-behavioral techniques used in a children's social skills group program. The study examines John Knox Presbytery (a presbytery of 64 churches and 105 resident ministers located in the upper Midwest region along a stretch of the Mississippi River involving portions of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa), in which attempts are being made to develop a community of clergy through gatherings of clergy for worship, education, development and support. Chapter Three describes five modes of imagining used in preaching: empathic imagining, prophetic imagining, lyrical-pictorial imagining, playful imagining, and resistant imagining. Chapter Four reviews the interviews of six preachers who preached homilies in the five modes of imagining. This project develops and enhances the leadership perceptions and skills necessary to recognize, minister to, and limit the impact of antagonists in the local church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130412298272768,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:31:11.543Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:36:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"afa1ead3-bad0-453a-81af-84ff18fc0496","accessControl_ssim":["7d97df16-bcf1-442f-82bf-f9a73029ff46"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Turnaround United Methodist churches in the California-Nevada annual conference"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:12:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2cff5af5-96d6-4864-9ef5-92c5dea945ca"],"hasLease_ssim":["a6673bd5-3ef1-4f45-a1b7-94ec563f8297"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ronald K Crandall"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David L Samelson"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church growth","United Methodist Church--Annual conferences"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study examined turnaround churches within the California-Nevada Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Turnaround churches were identified as those with an average worship attendance between 50 and 200 as of 1990, which were either declining or plateaued for the period 1984-1990, but experienced growth of 50 percent or more for the period 1990-1996 as measured by average worship attendance. Of the 377 churches in the conference, five churches plus the church pastored by the researcher satisfied these parameters. Personal interviews of laity and clergy were used to assess factors contributing to plateau and decline and factors leading to turnaround and growth in these five churches. The researcher's church was used for pretesting and for comparison. The study revealed that the following factors, listed in order of significance, contributed to plateau and decline: weak pastoral leadership, clergy sexual misconduct, the absence of a Biblical focus, weak preaching, the absence of planning or goal setting, the absence of young people and children, and facility problems. The most significant factor contributing to turnaround and growth was strong pastoral leadership which possessed the following qualities: positive personality, good preaching skills, vision and planning skills, being accessible to the congregation, and modeling faithfulness. The findings of the study revealed, contrary to the opinion of many West Coast United Methodist pastors, that the church growth methods and tools used successfully in the five turnaround churches were very consistent with those identified as most significant by the larger body of church growth research."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134547851608064,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:36:55.499Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:22:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ac18450d-ee57-45c8-830e-4c28e5160d24","accessControl_ssim":["9bd8fcdd-d457-4ca5-93bd-b5eedba1f37f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The church learning to extend hospitality: to each other, to guests, and to strangers in our midst including the least and the lost"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:06:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3292495d-5e04-40ea-abb9-c6b20bda927a"],"hasLease_ssim":["ed70dbcf-c60b-492a-b793-da415ece8665"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lewis A Parks"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. This project provides a strong biblical and theological foundation for hospitality. Clergy use it even when they have misgivings. They do this because the unity candle is becoming an effective symbol of marital unity. Although the marriage ceremony has developed over the centuries in an effort to express a needed theological message for marriage, it by no means is complete or final. The marriage ceremony contains many practices that were originally secular in nature and subsequently sacralized. The unity candle is another such practice undergoing this same sacralization process. Laity-influenced popular religion has supported this process over the last thirty years. This effort will lead to the eventual acceptance and assimilation of the unity candle as a legitimate part of the liturgy of the United Methodist marriage ceremony."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873069580156928,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:49:43.703Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
