Is it possible to serve both when the chaplain believes these entities' values are in conflict? This project was about the God-Country Paradox, the apparent self-contradictory concept of serving God and country as a Christian Army Chaplain. The author conducted a biblical case study of Daniel 1-6, and a phenomenological questionnaire of conservative Christian chaplains to learn about this challenge and to contribute to addressing it. The author then used that knowledge to craft the God-Country Paradox workshop, which he presented to active duty battalion chaplains as a mentoring session. The author determined that identity is a critical factor in serving God and country and that Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah are excellent biblical archetypes of how to serve God and country loyally.' -- Leaf [2]."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717303087005696,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:16:08.746Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:24:24Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:26:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cf019b00-8c7b-4a2b-bf62-01ae10752b23","accessControl_ssim":["40cda83f-8c4d-4465-ad56-7caa8d97a7e8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Moral injury : a chaplain pre-emptive training to mitigate the longevity of moral injury results through community, training, and spiritual resilience"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:24:23Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:03:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a86a6977-c122-42b0-a500-725c16edff32"],"hasLease_ssim":["5484dc3f-a212-4dff-af80-cc7ae1e42de6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce Epperly"],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Yet how does ministry of presence manifest when the chaplain is estranged from or does not have physical access to their service members? This project explored the question of ministry of presence among chaplains in highly dispersed and secure Military Intelligence units within the context of a Unitarian Universalist historico-theological framework. The research methodologies for the author's data corpus included: ethnographic research, questionnaires, focus group discussions, and expert and informal interviews. She then analyzed the results in order to glean a better understanding of the applicability of ministry of presence across multiple deployed spaces. The findings suggest that flexibility and an expanded notion of presence as interconnection, presence within, and presence as creativity, lead to greater fulfillment in performing and providing religious and spiritual support for one's deployed personnel.' -- Leaf [2]."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715293972398080,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:44:12.704Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:23:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:32:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e4e0aec7-afa5-452a-9d4a-5b7d904e9d84","accessControl_ssim":["2d51f6d8-1569-4927-8e97-f9040605512f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["African American millennials : silent observers waiting for the prodigal church to come home"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:23:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:40:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a85d46c5-77b3-4afe-9f4c-aea01fc120c0"],"hasLease_ssim":["4129eae7-9af8-4f1a-8bff-fa7bbe1cf616"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Anthony C. The black church was once the social, cultural, and political sanctuary of the black community. Today, in many ways, the black church has distanced herself from the norms and mores of the African American struggle. Her agenda is disconnected. Her programs are irrelevant. Her social engagement is faint and distant. Her influence in the community is extraneous. As a result, black millennials, who represent the largest cohort of African Americans alive today, have waned in their attendance and commitment due to theological and ideological dissonance. Research regarding black Millennial beliefs and behaviors reveal that they have not rejected their faith in God, but they no longer see the church's relevance amid the challenges of everyday life. The resurgence of the Black Church depends on her willingness to engage black millennials by transforming herself into a culture that is loving, accepting, and embracing of the gifts, talents, and diverse nuances of the black millennial generation.' -- Leaf [2]."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126740542685184,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:32:49.884Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:23:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:06:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"59600f3c-9962-47a8-b38c-a2ce9df694c4","accessControl_ssim":["892d8ce0-e6c9-40fc-9297-1760e7f54b72"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["ArtReach : a creative spiritual exploration for queer Christians"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:23:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:45:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["19aa88f5-68fb-45e3-838a-e6432acb4156"],"hasLease_ssim":["d297221a-2e36-4469-ad44-3eaef3a4a012"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Deborah Sokolove"],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The early Methodists experienced renewal and revival as they explored alternative and innovative missional models. People often find themselves going in a hundred directions. Without the ability for sustained focus, they struggle to remain fully present to the things that matter most. This loss of attentiveness can result in a devastating loss of connectedness (i.e., being fully present) to what God is doing, to the condition of one's self, and to how we are connected to others. To test this hypothesis, silence is introduced using disciplines such as solitude, meditation, and spiritual journaling. To fulfill the goal of the project, Soldiers and Civilians from the United States Army Cyber Command and United States Army Chaplain School and Center completed a seven-day devotional (including fasting from social media). Also, surveys and personal interviews were conducted to gain feedback. The project concludes the practice of silence, solitude, journaling, and fasting from social media does bring about an increase in spiritual growth and connectedness.' -- Leaf [2]."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721520274079744,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:23:10.569Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:23:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:39:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"484fe576-d92a-4b91-b9ac-d6096fdc0b0f","accessControl_ssim":["d7c25639-809e-4691-8103-d469bd769c63"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Creating contemporary worship : interventions for developing contemporary worship that is theologically sound, liturgically mindful, and culturally relevant"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:23:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:14:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["de0d450f-0082-4610-a547-b5262abeda6c"],"hasLease_ssim":["8fc95f77-1be7-410f-b28b-44c898ad0a13"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Anna A. The author of this project offers interventions at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church in Mobile, Alabama, to develop a process for creating Contemporary Worship that other United Methodist Churches can replicate.
