Spiritual fitness is recognized as a key component of Soldier and family readiness, but existing programs fail to adequately address spiritual fitness. US Army chaplains are best positioned to correct this deficiency. Colonized theological frameworks of recruited pastors affect their involvement in holistic ministries that address social justice work. This project proposes a teaching module that addresses salvation as health, healing, and wholeness in the Wesleyan tradition. Sections in this module are critical to teaching these recruited pastors and leaders the importance of seeing salvation holistically (meaning as salvation for the body, mind, and spirit) in order to engage in effective ministry. Prior to the inception of this project, the members of this young congregation were complacent with the idea of staying within the walls of their edifice and expect members to come looking for the church, instead of the church's reaching out into the communities to win souls for Christ. The author explains what the results of poor self-care are and focuses on burnout and compassion fatigue. He wrote and presented a 4-week Bible study, multiple leadership lessons, and conducted a one-day Chaplain workshop to address the topic. He also conducted surveys, interviews, and made personal observations to prove his thesis. The results led to conclusions and further insights regarding the importance of self-care in this setting. The results also contributed to an increased awareness with command leadership, the development of ongoing programming, and more consistent self-care practices among participants. However, the phenomenon appears to have been around for centuries, perhaps since soldiers have gone [off] to war and suffered in [the] aftermath. This study contends that when military chaplains refer individuals with mental issues to behavioral health services, chaplains miss the opportunity to offer much-needed religious guidance for those who suffer. With the goal of personal and communal wholeness, this project aims to reclaim the biblical practice of hospitality and to help the modern church widen its understanding of how God heals in the world today. My contextualization of this premise stems from working with a local Parkinson's community, serving as a drug court chaplain, volunteering at an adult respite program for persons with Alzheimer's and dementia, leading a local church staff comprised of 104 people, and serving as the Senior Minister of a large membership United Methodist congregation. The author has created a leadership guide for practical ways every congregation may implement a practice of relating healing and hospitality. The author designed a particular form of the first memorial service to heal the wounded hearts of the bereaved. First, the author asked the bereaved families to prepare articles left by the deceased, which would allow them to remember their beloved parents, and then had the first memorial service in a chapel with the small group members to which the bereaved families belonged. The bereaved experienced the recovery of their wounded hearts by participating in the first memorial service, confirming that they were not completely separated from their parents, but still connected. The author conducted interviews and observations on two aspects - the daily life and the church life before and after the first memorial service - to track how the loss and grief of the bereaved families had been changed through the service.
