Abstract
  • Since 1945 cultural changes in the United States have brought about cultural disestablishment of the 'mainline' Protestant denominations, which has in turn generated tremendous struggles within these institutions. This project traces the history of American mainline Protestantism, especially the Presbyterian Church (USA), and identifies the most important causes and consequences of disestablishment. The project isolates theological themes and establishes future trajectories to move mainline churches into the comingmillennium. To assist clergy and laity in understanding and respondingto disestablishment, the project presents a symposium that is then criticized by a select group of pastors and laypersons.
