  • The thesis of the project is that people recovering from chemical dependency will have a level of faith equivalent to James Fowler's stage 3 or higher. To test the thesis, a standardized questionnaire was given to patients of the Presbyterian Hospital chemical dependency unit in Oklahoma City; the questionnaires were given as the patients arrived and also to 100 former patients who had maintained at least one year of sobriety. Of the eleven pre-treatment respondents, nine were stage 2 and two were stage 3. Of the 60 with at least one year sobriety who responded, twenty-eight were at stage 3, fifteen were at stage 4, and fourteen were at stage 5. This study suggests that faith stage changes occur as chemically dependent people gain and maintain sobriety.
