Abstract
  • This project-thesis develops a plan to restore the eucharist to a central place in United Methodist worship. Present practice is not consistent with historical Christianity nor with Wesleyan Methodism. To be actively involved in the healing of the broken body of Christ this part of their heritage must be understood and reclaimed. Meeting with a reflection group, representative of the congregation, Methodist eucharistic heritage, ecumenical and liturgical renewal, and local customs were studied. The church year provided the vehicle through which themes of the eucharist were celebrated. Taped interviews with the congregation following each service helped assess progress. Initial indications show a gradual moving away from a penitential understanding to a greater sense of community celebration.
