Abstract
  • This project 1) reviews the literature of sociology and developmental psychology in relation to the erosion of marriage commitment; 2) reviews the literature of covenant with special attention to the concept of marriage as covenant; 3) reports the results of a questionnaire survey examining the marriage preparation practices of 173 Presbyterian clergy; and 4) reviews the literature of marriage counseling for the most common problems faced by couples in the first two years of marriage. The project proposes and evaluates a programmatic alternative which 1) prepares the couples for marriage as a covenant commitment; 2) uses the expertise of professionals to address problems common to early marriage; and 3) uses married lay couples as role models for those preparing for marriage.
