Abstract
  • The author evaluated the effectiveness of biblical preaching within a military setting, namely within a general Protestant worship service. The study focused on the Gospel of John and the communication of five doctrinally specific messages, which were preached to a congregation of military men and women, Department of Defense workers, retirees, and their families. Oral and written responses from twelve responders were analyzed by the author, and themes emanating from the study revealed that sermon structure, specific stories and examples, word choice, group identity, etc, were significant factors that contributed to the effectiveness of the sermon and that of the preacher.
