Abstract

A primary element in facilitating spiritual renewal of congregations is pastoral leadership. Participatory Action Research (PAR) provides an intentional systematic approach for this endeavor. Nine cycles of planning, reflection, and practice of spiritual disciplines resulted in a gradual transformation among participants. Key elements of pastoral life are noted as inseparable from the process of spiritual formation: calling, commitment, community, and conflict. The change experienced during the research process became a catalyst for initiating spiritual formation processes for pastoral leaders. Findings support PAR as a heuristic model of adult education which provides potential for spiritual renewal, transformation, and growth.
