- Abstract
- It is helpful at the outset of a journey to have in one’s possession a road map. Such a map affords some general sense as to where one is headed and some insight into certain key checkpoints that can be utilized in gauging one’s movement. An overview of the scheme and anticipated development of this paper would serve the same purpose. The starting point here is the identification and the description of the basic problem which has spawned this project–namely, the fundamental estrangement of persons from their spiritual roots. This discussion occupies the first chapter and is followed by an outline in the next chapter of the theoretical foundations for a practical response to the problem. The response ultimately developed here is related to the phenomenon of religious mysticism. The third chapter describes in detail the Intensive Retreat, a model constructed for the purpose of enabling spiritual encounter and patterned on the mystical route. The next chapter reports on the data-gathering completed on the final experimental trials with the Intensive Retreat model and elaborates on certain hypotheses related to that model, while the final chapter considers conclusions and implications that have been suggested by the overall experience of this project.
