Abstract
  • The purpose of this study was to reestablish a sense of community within a congregation that had become fractionalized due to pastoral abuse. The contention was that if the sanctuary, holy space, had been profaned, the people had likewise been profaned. The author accomplished this through congregational participation in a liturgy rededicating the church and reconsecrating the sanctuary. The result was threefold. First, it reestablished the covenant between the congregation and God. Second, it acknowledged the negativity of the past and looked to the future with hope. Third, it fostered a renewed sense of community and direction for the church.
