Abstract
  • The Philippine Independent Church, with about 5 million members, has a glorious history. At the time of its schism from the Roman Catholic church in the Philippines, it received tremendous support from the Filipino masses who saw it to be the embodiment of their religious and political aspirations. In the Philippines, culture and religion, and church and society are inextricably intertwined. The history of the Philippine Independent Church cannot be understood apart from the history of the Filipino people. It is a history of continuous struggle for freedom, identity, and sovereignty. The Filipinos were colonized by Spain for over 300 years, by the United States for 50 years, and was occupied by Japan for 4 years. Throughout its colonial history, the Philippines experienced revolts and uprisings culminating in the Revolution of 1896-1898. The Philippine Independent Church became known as the lone tangible product of the Revolution of 1898 and symbol of the continuing struggle for freedom.
