- Abstract
- Intergenerational worship is corporate worship that includes people of more than one age group. For the purposes of this project, I am defining it as worship that intentionally involves in a balanced manner the entire age span ranging from preschoolers to older adults as participants in the action of Christian worship…. The particular approach to intergenerational worship in this project is not a pre-conceived liturgy or set order of worship; but rather it is an open approach that values variety and diversity in worship… This project does not propose any closed theology of intergenerational worship. The intent of the writer is to encourage experimentation and to offer some possibilities alongside other innovations in worship for children, youth, and adults. The designing of intergenerational liturgies by this writer involves thematic unity. Without a fixed order to provide a framework for the liturgies, it is important that the theme of each celebration be the thread that holds the liturgy together. It is the writer’s intent that thematic unity will be evident in the four model liturgies in this project. However, thematic unity is not intended to be a basic tenet for all intergenerational worship, and it is not dealt with extensively in this project. A theological basis for intergenerational worship and developmental awareness are dealt with more fully in this project. Theological criteria, whether those presented in this project or not, are important when one is experimenting with innovations in worship. The theological criteria in chapter two of this project are basic to this writer’s approach to intergenerational worship in the local church. Sensitivity to people of all ages is vital for an inclusive, age-balanced liturgy; and so developmental awareness is a key ingredient in this writer's work with intergenerational worship.
