Abstrakt

Pastoral preaching in an addictive culture can be therapeutic when it is informed by the theology and method of the 12 step program pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. Such preaching involves a measure of self-disclosure, providing identification between preacher and hearer. The author did qualitative research with men and women in recovery who were participating in Serenity Retreats, and who affirmed the need for a preacher's self-disclosure and awareness of recovery motifs. He also did similar research within a parish setting, with like results. Included are chapters on the theological foundations of the 12 Step programs, pastoral care preaching, and autobiographical preaching.
