- Abstract
- The thesis is that since the majority of deacons in the Archdiocese of St Paul and Minneapolis will be engaged in parish ministry, the training of permanent deacons for this ministry will require changes in the current formation program. The author gathered information from four sources: the permanent deacons of this archdiocese; the priests with whom they minister; the local formation program; and the national office for the permanent diaconate in Washington, DC. The research uncovered four areas of concern: 1) the deacon's self-identity; 2) relations with pastors and staff; 3) the quality of education received in formation; and 4) the need for deacons to act as mentors for candidates.
