- Abstract
- This thesis identifies the major developmental stages within the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius. The stages of identity, intimacy and generativity are used as an interpretative schema for identifying the major developmental stages. The primary tasks that constitute each of these stages were correlated with particular sections in the Spiritual Exercises in order to identify the operative developmental process. Individuals were directed through the Exercises. the director kept notes from each meeting which, along with the results of pre- and post-set instruments, and the the director's observations of the exercitants in their living and ministerial setting, provided the primary data for the thesis. The work of Ignatian scholars, and the work of developmental psychologists provided data that was also essential to the thesis development. The source data sustained the thesis that identity, intimacy and generativity and the tasks operative within each respective stage are major developmental stages within the Spiritual Exercises.
