Abstract
  • The purpose of this project is to develop a program model for the spiritual development of believers in the Tenth Episcopal District African Methodist Episcopal Church. Attention is given to the need for intentionality in teaching and nurturing believers in the church. Notice is given to the role of the pastor as teacher and disciple, spiritual growth and the biblical mandate for the people of God and the institutional church of God, and spiritual growth and the accountability of such in the church. The practicum involved the participation of several groups of Tenth District AMEC. The Sealy Circuit participated in a twelve-week Bible study series, 'Radical Christian Living,' clergy of the Tenth District participated in surveys and some in a four-week covenant group charged with developing a definition of 'spiritual maturity' and in describing the characteristics of a spiritually mature congregation. The model developed is based on recommendations of the covenant group, experience of the systematic Bible study in the Sealy Circuit, and the provisions of the class leader system of the AME Church.
