Abstract
  • The goal of this project was to develop spiritual discernment groups in a congregation. The purpose of these groups was to nurture discernment in the lives of the participants. By 'discernment,' we mean fostering an awareness of God working in our lives. Members of the groups strove to assist each other in paying attention to God. Nine people were trained to be leaders of the groups. Five groups were formed incorporating twenty-seven participants. As part of the project, a spiritual discernment handbook was developed by the author. At the first meeting the participants were asked sixteen questions to describe their spiritual life and their practice of spiritual disciplines. They were given the same questions at the conclusion of the experience, along with several essay type questions. There was an over-all increase in the average practice of spiritual disciplines.
