Abstract
  • The project documents how the role of sponsors has evolved into a witnessing or honorary position. It researches the origins and historical changes in the practice of baptism. An examination of present trends shows that a revised theology of sponsorship in baptism and a renewal of sacramental practice is needed. To facilitate the meeting of these needs a comprehensive program for baptismal education of sponsors (including godparents, parents, adult friends of adult candidates, and the congregation) is proposed. A plan for the enrichment of the baptismal liturgy also is included.
