  • This research examines how clients and therapists use metaphorical language to describe conflicted marital systems. The emergence of metaphor in language is explored and a working hypothesis is posited that the metaphor is the main bridge between ourselves and an understanding of our relationship to reality. The author proposes the use of seven interactional metaphors as a way of helping clients to understand the recurring dynamics of their marital system. He offers a number of illustrated case metaphors regarding the practicality of such a methodology.
