Abstract
  • Pastoral counseling has been handled exclusively by pastors in spite of the incredible demands upon their time. With basic training, a group of lay caregivers could fulfill the biblical injunction to encourage others, thereby relieving some of the counseling burden pastors now carry . A group of twelve carefully selected members of Tiffany Fellowship Assembly of God were trained in specific caregiving skills around an 'encouraging' model of counseling. An analysis of variance of the supervisors' ratings indicated a significant level (p<.01) of increased caregiving skills in the participants. additionally the caregivers perceived themselves as significantly more confident (p<.05) in caregiving situations.
