- Abstract
- Concrete ministry to the poor is a central duty for every parish. But many parishes experience obstacles to this ministry, including suburban relocation, ethnic homogeneity, and even a perceived opposition between a traditional liturgical identity and participation in face-to-face outreach. The author of this study established a program in a liturgical, ethnically distinct parish that had little experience in outreach. The resulting ministry project successfully demonstrated that parishes are able to overcome obstacles to outreach, provided that the new ministry is linked meaningfully to traditional foundations, and is managed according to the needs of those receiving and providing ministry.
