  • With the exception of Horton Davies' studies of worship in England, little has been written on Baptist worship. With few exceptions, Baptist theological studies have largely ignored it. The lingering shadows of revivalism have left most Baptists without 'a sense of the liturgical' and with a fear of anything that feels formal. Differences in liturgical practices exist between different groups of Baptists, and distinctions can be made between British Baptists and Baptists in America and between American and Southern Baptists. As early as the eighteenth century there were Baptists who contended against the dangers of subjectivism. Baptists' free church tradition moreover is not without a liturgical and theological perspective necessary for the development of 'a sense of the liturgical.' the work of P. T. Forsyth, for instance, demonstrates what can be done with worship in the free church tradition. The best hope for liturgical renewal lies in a historical-theological perspective. Rethinking understanding of worship is best done in a laboratory setting, i.e., in planning and evaluating services of worship.
