Abstract
  • The crisis of mainline decline manifesting itself in the Presbyterian Church is an opportunity for development of a post-modern church. The thesis reviews studies on mainline decline and postmodernism. It utilizes a radical understanding of the Pauline ecclesia as a community in which all relationships had to be renegotiated: 'neither slave nor free, Jew nor Greek, male nor female.' The thesis draws on the author's experience in church development as a presbytery associate executive. A new post-modern church is possible, but difficult if not impossible to realize.
