Abstract
  • This biographical thesis is derived predominantly from primary source materials proposes and successfully defends the Rev. Jonathan Fisher, Congregational pastor of Bluehill, Maine from 1796-1837, as a foremost later-day Puritan exemplar of the early 19th century. It secondarily traces the rise and fall of a previously unreported major spiritual awakening in Hancock County from approximately 1798-1802, of a theologically Reformed Calvinist identity and magnitude similar to the first stage of the Great Awakening which hit the Northampton parish of Jonathan Edwards in 1734.
