  • This project investigates ways leaders, lay and clergy, can assist struggling congregations based on a model of assessment used in the medical movement known as hospice care. Using resources modeled on palliative care, leaders assist congregants through the stages of merger or closure. An educational course for leaders participating in the Lay Servant Ministry program of the United Methodist Church was created. The course raises the awareness level of what it means to be a church within a community, the importance of working toward vitality, and the grief process for parishioners when churches close or merge.
