  • The author explores the relationship between Wesley's doctrine of sanctification and Fowler's theory of faith development. Research was first done separately on each. Major conclusions are that both build on God's grace; each would treat babies differently; Wesley's entire sanctification has much in common with Fowler's universalizing faith; Wesley described stages of sanctification; Fowler's stage five is very compatible with mature sanctification; Wesley's basic theology is a good basis for modern theologizing; and churches that encourage faith stage growth can at the same time teach and lead its members on their journey of sanctification.
