Abstract
  • This project proposes that local congregations in communities divided by racial prejudice can foster healing and reconciliation in the community and in the church by claiming God's call to local mission with children in public schools. The project motivates and trains members of First United Methodist Church (Hemingway, S Car) to become volunteer tutors with children in Hemingway Primary School for six weeks in 1996. Needs become apparent and resistant attitudes change. Volunteers become so involved in rewards of one-on-one ministry that they put aside racial issues. The church comes to understand that local mission as as important as global mission.
